Reflections on 25 years of supporting legal action

Article

STRATEGIC litigation can have a major impact when it is closely allied to other change strategies such as community organising, mobilising public opinion and legal advocacy.

This was one of a series of lessons detailed in an article by SCI Director Martin O’Brien and James Goldston, the Executive Director of The Open Society Justice Initiative.

They reflected on their long experience with Atlantic Philanthropies and Open Society Foundations in supporting legal initiatives and the value they see in philanthropic organisations maintaining that commitment in the future.

As their accounts show, legal action remains crucial not only to providing access to justice but also to making significant positive changes in societies.

The article featured in a special edition of Alliance Magazine examining law, philanthropy & social justice.
