This note looks at the application of a rights-based approach in philanthropy.
It sets out some thoughts for grant makers interested in applying a rights-based approach.
The observations are based on work carried out by SCI for the Oak Foundation.
At its very simplest, a rights-based approach involves making people aware of their rights, empowering them to claim them, whilst also increasing the accountability of those responsible for respecting, and fulfilling them.
The approach often leads to a focus on the most disadvantaged and disenfranchised.
